Creating Inclusive Environments

Build a Learning Community to Increase Motivation

Creating inclusive work environment is imperative to the social and educational development of exceptional people, serving as a foundation for developing societal awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities. This is an essential piece in building a learning community that supports all learners, allowing the employee to focus their attention on goals, increase their cooperation and confidence, and thus motivation to learn.

The inclusion of employees with special needs, specifically autism spectrum disorders, requires new management practices, instructional supports, and motivational strategies for leaders. These changes can also benefit the workplace as a whole. “In addition to the unique gifts and interests that autistic's bring the  community as people, their responses can serve as an early warning system around andragogical problems to be solved for everyone’s benefit. (Chandler-Olcott&Kluth, 2009; Haskins, 2012). If we are able to accommodate the unique needs of the students with autism, we will indirectly support the needs of typical learners, not only by providing additional supports to the curriculum but also by increasing their understanding of children with disabilities creating a generation of socially responsible and diversity-aware adults.
